Book synopsis:

If you’re a dreamer, there is no doubt you have had your heart broken a few times, whether it was by the people you loved or by your own thoughts.

Secrets of a Broken Heart is a poetry collection to carry you through the heartbreak. It tells a story of healing, of how nothing matters more than to just keep dreaming no matter how much it hurts at times.

Secrets of a Broken Heart covers topics such as mental health, heartbreak and adulthood. Through different sections, Martens takes the reader on a journey from being heartbroken to standing your ground. And the secret? Maybe sometimes when a heart breaks, the question shouldn’t be who broke it, but how you can put the pieces back together yourself.

Interview:

  • 1. I just want to begin by saying a huge congratulations on the release of your debut poetry collection, Secrets of a Broken Heart. How would you best describe what this collection is about?
  • Thank you so much! Secrets of a Broken Heart is about love, but in the broad sense of the word. At first, it might seem like the book is mostly about break-up and about growing from that, but more than that, it is about how love exists in different forms, and it never truly leaves you.

  • 2. Secrets of a Broken Heart focus on the themes such as heartbreak and mental health. Did your own experiences of these topics influence your writing in any way?
  • Yes, very much so. I wouldn’t say that all poems are completely about my own experience, but a lot of them are heavily influenced by it, whether that be by things that happened to myself or things that I saw happen to people around me.

  • 3. In your Press Release, you said that you hope this collection of poetry opens up a conversation. To those who read this book, what conversations do you hope it will open up for them?
  • Any conversation that they wish to have. I think it’s important that people share what’s on their mind, no matter what that might be. I wish for an honest world, where everyone can be who they want to be and say what they want to say.

  • 4. What did you enjoy the most about living in the U.K.?
  • There’s so many different things that I love about the UK! I lived there for a year, as I went to university there to get my masters of art. I loved the atmosphere at the university. There were many students from all over the world there, and it was so amazing to learn about different cultures.

  • 5. What inspired you to write Secrets of a Broken Heart?
  • There isn’t one thing that inspired me, there also wasn’t one moment that I thought: I’m going to write a book. At first, the poems were just poems by themselves, I wrote them seperately of each other, and only later got the idea to put them together. So each poem has a different thing that inspired me. But overall, other writes inspire me to write. One of my favourite poets is Lang Leav. Her poetry is part of what made me believe I could write poetry as well.

  • 6. It’s no secret that I’m a cat lover, and with two cats myself, I can’t not ask about yours. What are your cat‘s names, ages and most importantly, what are they like? 😊
  • My cats are called Zapper and Zoey. They’re brother and sister, and the sweetest cats in the world in my totally biased opinion. They live at my parents’ house, we’ve had them for about 12 years now I think.

  • 7. What’s your favourite snack to eat while writing?
  • Chocolate! I love all things chocolate.

  • 8. If you could have dinner with any person, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
  • My friend Jay Whitehead, who has worked with me on a lot of different projects, including the marketing of this book. We haven’t seen each other in almost two years, so it would be great to have dinner and catch up! Jay is one of my biggest inspiratons, and one of my best friends.

  • 9. Why should readers buy a copy of Secrets of a Broken Heart?
  • Because it is honest, it’s real, and it hopefully has something in it that everyone can relate to.

  • 10. Finally, if you could chose one poem from the collection to take with you to a desert island, what would it be and why?
  • I’d take the poem ‘Silly dreamer’. It’s one that’s often stuck in my head anyway. It is only four lines long, but it gives me hope, and that is what you need when you’re stuck on an island!
