O.W.L.S TBR // Magical Readathon 2020

Trader of Magical Tomes (4)

Hi everyone,

How are we all?

I hope you’re all doing okay and staying safe!

The past few months of 2020 have all been a bit surreal haven’t they? Hope you’re all staying safe during this lockdown. I’m not sure how it’s been in the country you live in, but at the moment in the UK we are currently in lockdown and can only leave the house for essential work, essential supplies and one form of exercise per day.

I’m not sure if many of you know, but as I work in a well known pet shop, I’m currently classed as an essential worker. So even though I’m still working and not in the house every day, I thought that I’d use my days off in self-isolation to focus on reading more. I’ve been in an awful reading slump since the end of January, only listening to audiobooks, so I’m hoping this readathon will help with this!

This year I’ve decided to participate in The Magical Readathon 2020 – yay!  I did unofficially take part last year over on Twitter, you may remember if you follow me over there (@FTLOBOOKS) but I didn’t end up completing my O.W.L’s.

What is The Magical Readathon Ash?

If you’ve been living under a big pile of books and aren’t sure what this readathon is, it’s based around Harry Potter, and the Wizarding exams students at Hogwarts take in year 5 (O.W.L’s) and year 7 (N.E.W.T’s). This readathon is carried out over the year and is split into two readathons, both a month long. O.W.L’s take place in April and the N.E.W.T’s take place later on in the year.

For the readathon you choose a career path you’d like to complete and then you read a book for each subject required for the career path you choose. This year optional courses and seminars have become available to take if you want to push yourself.

For more information on the Magical Readathon and to find more out about how you can get involved you can watch G’s (the creator’s) announcement video here:

Let me know in the comments if you’re participating this year, let’s spur each other on!

Here are the prompts required to complete for each subject, one book needs to be read for each O.W.L subject in your chosen career path:

OWL prompts 2 2020 in white

Career Path chosen:

Trader of Magical Tomes

I”ve decided to go for Trader of Magical Tomes this year as I like the prompts and it is a realistic TBR for me. I figured that if I complete all of the required subjects I can read additional books for courses and seminars. Given that I love books and have retail experience, I thought this career path was kind of fitting. Reading breaks are also guaranteed with this career so that’s a win!

O.W.L.’S needed:
Ancient Runes
History of Magic

N.E.W.T.’S Needed:
E in Ancient Runes (2 books)
A in Charms (1 book)
E in History of Magic (2 books)

Books chosen for each prompt:
Ancient Runes: Heart rune – Heart on the cover or in the title

I AM, I AM, I AM – Maggie O’Farrell
I picked this book up a while ago in The Works for a few pounds. I’ve heard good things about it and it sounds interesting. I decided to go for this book because I will keep pushing it down my TBR if I don’t have an excuse to read it.

Charms: Lumos Maxima – White Cover
The Warehouse –  Rob Hart
I really should have read this book already as it’s an ARC copy that I own. I received it in the SBC meeting back in the summer last year. It’s a book I was really hyped about before even knowing it was going to be a book at the meeting. I don’t know why I haven’t read it yet because I really want to, so I can’t wait to get stuck in. While the finished cover isn’t white, the ARC cover is!

History of Magic: Witch Hunts – A book featuring witches/wizards
Sabrina: Season of the Witch – Sarah Rees Brennan
I love the comics and Netflix series and was so hyped for this book. When I saw it at YALC it was an instant buy. I still haven’t got around to it so am really intrigued to see if it’s any good!

Transfiguration: Animagus lecture – Book/series that includes shapeshifting
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde – Robert Louis Stevenson
I bought this book last year thinking I’d love it. It’s a gothic horror and given how much I love Dracula and Frankenstein I assumed I’d enjoy this too. When I picked it up last year I ended up putting down after a few pages because I didn’t get on with it at all. I’m hoping I just wasn’t feeling it at the time and that I’ll enjoy it the second time around – I’m determined to give it another shot and not DNF it!

Extra Courses/Seminars/Training:

Trader of Magical Tomes (1)

Considering I chose the Trader of Magical Tomes career path, I figured I may as well take the Magical Shop Management course too. It would definitely come in useful if I pass all of my exams and end up getting a job in Flourish and Blotts. Imagine being the manager of a magical bookshop… yes please!

O.W.L.’S Needed:

N.E.W.T’s Needed:
A in Arithmancy (1 book)

Book chosen for prompt:
Arithmancy: Magical qualities of number 2; balance/opposites – read something outside of your favourite genre
To Kill a Kingdom – Alexandra Christo
This was a tough choice to make as I try to read as widely as possible. My favourite genre is always changing and I wouldn’t say I have one particular favourite. There are genres I’m more picky with however and those I don’t read as much as others – Fantasy and Sci-fi. It’s not that I don’t like these genres, but I really have to be in the mood to read them. I decided on TKAK because everyone raves about how good it was and it’s been on my TBR for the longest time.

Trader of Magical Tomes (6)

As soon as I saw that animagus training was an optional extra, of course I decided that I had to take this too. Imagine being able to transfigure into a cat and cuddle up in front of an open fire in a bookshop when it’s quiet. Although if someone was travelling via the floo network, I may end up getting stood on! As I’ll already be taking transfiguration for my career path, and arithmancy for the management course, it’s only one extra book to read. It was a no brainer really!

O.W.L’S Needed:

N.E.W.T’S Needed:
A in Arithmancy (1 book)
E in Potions (2 books)
O is Transfiguration (3 books)

Books chosen for prompt:
Arithmancy: Magical qualities of number 2; balance/opposites – read something outside of your favourite genre
To Kill a Kingdom – Alexandra Christo

Potions: Shrinking solution – books under 150 pages
Koyasan – Darren Shan
I stumbled across this book on a bookswap shelf when I worked at a call centre in 2017. If you don’t already know Darren Shan is one of my all time favourite authors and I’ve always been interested in reading this short story he wrote for World Book Day years ago. I still haven’t got around to reading it and now is the perfect time to!

Transfiguration: Animagus lecture – Book/series that includes shapeshifting
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde – Robert Louis Stevenson

Full list of books to read & book length:

Trader of Magical Tomes (4)

So here we have it, my entire reading list for the O.W.L’s. It’s very doable and with an extra fews off this month I’m really hoping to complete it along with my optional extras. 6 books, 2 of which are short reads should be fine – here’s to hoping my reading slump has gone. As there are quite a few books to choose from it gives me a bit more leeway considering how much of a mood reader I am.

Essential reads:
1. I AM, I AM, I AM – Maggie O’Farrell (290 pages)
2. The Warehouse – Rob Hart (356 pages)
3. Sabrina: Season of the Witch – Sarah Rees Brennan (284 pages)
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde – Robert Louis Stevenson (111 pages)

Optional reads:
5. To Kill a Kingdom – Alexandra Christo (358 pages)
6. Koyasan – Darren Shan (107 pages)

Total essential pages: 1041
Total optional pages: 465
Total pages overall: 1506

I’m thinking of doing weekly blog updates on my progress and I’ll probably be doing daily updates throughout the readathon on Twitter too. If you want to follow my progress on twitter my handle is @FTLOBOOKS.

Are you taking part? What’s your chosen career path? Are you taking any additional subjects? Let me know in the comments! 🙂
