Book Review: A Trinity of Wicked Tales, Volume One, Jilted Love – Kyla Ross

“Now who am I going to marry?” – A Trinity of Wicked Tales, Volume One, Jilted Love, p. 36

Title: A Trinity of Wicked Tales, Volume One, Jilted Love
Author: Kyla Ross
Published: 28th January 2017
My Rating: ★★★★☆
Goodreads Rating: 4.11
Pages: 92
Genre: Adult Horror/Thriller

Before I begin my review of this book I want to state that this is an adult book and wouldn’t really be suitable for younger readers due to its content. It makes quite detailed and frequent references to drug use, sex and violence.

Spoiler Free, I talk about aspects of the story but not any that give away the overall plot/ending.

I received a free copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review – all views are my own. I would also like to thank Reader’s House (@Readers_tweets) for putting me in contact with Kyla and making me aware of this book.

The quote chosen above is my favourite quote in the book. It won’t make much sense if you haven’t read the book, but if you have, you’ll know why it is.

Synopsis:

Suspicion meets desperation in this compendium of dark tales that ignite the inner demons of desperate souls and take them on a violent journey filled with rage, deception, and horrifying acts that will either make or break them. Do they have what it takes to survive or will their worlds continue to spiral out of control?

Overall opinion of the book:

This book is a collection of three short stories, all containing a similar theme of twisted, violent actions. The stories certainly aren’t for the faint-hearted or squeamish, but if you love gory, twisted books like I do, then I’d definitely recommend this!

The stories are only short, but I thoroughly enjoyed each of them and could have easily read them as extended, full novels. My favourite story of the three was Iris. I was rooting for the protagonist Natalie to have a happy life, and was completely shocked by the ending! I also liked the use of flashbacks in this story. The last story Phil reminded me of the US TV series Dexter in a way. It was shocking and completely engrossed me.

What was great about this book is that although the stories are only short, none of the plots moved too quickly, they were evenly paced and easy to follow. They were all individual and didn’t merge into each other. Each of the different stories had a completely different feel and voice.

This might be trivial to most people but I loved that Ross uses semi colons. I think they’re so underrated and not used enough in novels, so that was awesome to see!

I love Ross’s writing style, the book was easy to follow and read, but it also kept me questioning and guessing what would happen next. There were more than a few unexpected twists and turns that I didn’t see coming! It’s evident that a lot of time and thought has gone into each tale and I’m excited to read the next volumes in the series!

The only negative I could pick out was that I did notice a couple of slight grammar and font errors, but I don’t think the majority of readers would be bothered or even notice these.

Overall thoughts:

I would definitely recommend this book to those of you that enjoy something that’s dark and shocking. It’s a great volume of stories and I’m honestly looking forward to the next in the series.

As this book is short, it makes for a good read if you’re travelling or have an hour spare too.  🙂

It’s interesting how there’s only 3 stories–so I’m sure they’re longer and more fleshed out than those found in a usual collection. That doesn’t happen too often!
