Hi everyone,
I hope you’re all doing great!
I decided to skip last week’s topic, genre benders, as I couldn’t really think of any books I wanted to include! This weeks topic is a great one though, and I couldn’t wait to write up this post.
I hope you enjoy. Let me know in the comments below what characters you love even though you know you shouldn’t. 🙂
Top 5 Wednesday (T5W) was created by the YouTubers Lainey – https://www.youtube.com/user/gingerreadslainey/videos and Samantha – https://www.youtube.com/user/thoughtsontomes in 2013. I know I’m late to the party, but it’s better late than never eh? It’s a tag used by both YouTubers and Bloggers.
A new topic is chosen weekly and every Wednesday you upload a list of 5 books that are related to the chosen topic.
If you would like to get involved and join in, here is a link to the Goodreads group where each topic is published: https://www.goodreads.com/group/show/118368-top-5-wednesday
THE T5W TOPIC THIS WEEK IS PROBLEMATIC FAVES:
(Character’s you don’t want to love, but you can’t help it)
1. Bertha – Jane Eyre
I can’t help but feel intrigued by Bertha, and to be honest, I really feel for her. I know that she does some questionable things in the novel (I won’t include them incase anyone hasn’t read it), but part of me can’t help but think that it’s not entirely her fault. I mean, she is locked in the attic after all!
I would like to read Wide Sargasso Sea sometime soon, to have more of a perspective of Bertha. Although it isn’t written by Charlotte Bronte, it sounds like an interesting read!
2. Gollum – The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy
I mean, what can I say? As irritating as he is, Gollum does make the books. He’s a tortured soul and I can’t help but like and feel for him!
3. Percy – The Gentleman’s Guide to Vice and Virtue
He’s such an arrogant, self-absorbed, spoilt character that I know I shouldn’t like. But do I? Abso-bloody-lutely! I can’t help it, I know that he’s not a bad egg deep down and I love how much he cares for Percy – it melts my heart!
4. Lord Loss – The Demonata series
I know he’s the bad guy, but he’s hilarious and absolutely brilliant in my opinion. Definitely one of my all time favourite book villains!
5. Draco Malfoy – The Harry Potter series
He’s another irritating and arrogant character, especially in the first five books, but after the 6th book I actually felt sorry for him. I also think that Tom Felton is rather good looking, so naturally I ended up liking Malfoy even though I probably shouldn’t!

I feel sorry for Bertha, too! There’s a lot of interesting commentary surrounding her and Jane about roles and types of women, as well as mental illness

There is! I’ve studied the mad woman in the attic for part of my degree and some other commentary regarding it, was interesting!

wide Sargasso Sea is so good! It’s so sad as well, if anything it fuelled my dislike of Jane Eyre haha.

I’ll definitely have to read it soon. Of Jane Eyre the book or the character?
